Here you can see what we are working on and how you can get involved. We are meeting once a month at Laughing Planet in Woodstock to discuss current and future projects as a team. If you would like to attend, please contact Katharina Steinmeyer @ green_team_contact@duniwayelementary.org.
Generally we are working on the following: - Cafeteria: waste reduction in lunch boxes, improve recycling, investigate healthier lunch suppliers
- Landscaping/Gardening/Composting: fall leaf raking, spring planting of native plants, planter boxes/garden creation
- Green Education: Get Green School certification, research educational material for teachers, create and maintain info/bulletin boards, encourage and assist in creating etc.
- Community Organizers: create and maintain a calendar of community events regarding sustainability, outdoor activities, nature education/clean-up events etc.
- Energy/Water: work on finding ways to reduce energy and water use at our school and measure success based on energy audit done 4 years ago
- Grant Writers: assist in finding and writing grants for various projects
- Walk/Bike to school: promotes physical activity and builds community networks. By reducing traffic congestion, it decreases pollution and creates safer pedestrian areas in front of school.
Current projects include: - Working with PPS and Depave on removing some of the concrete in front of the south-facing side of the "kindergarten" addition to install a bios-wale/native garden and to plant much needed shade trees.
- Continuing the silverware drive in the cafeteria and finding solutions for reducing lunch waste by replacing Styrofoam trays, eliminating sporks etc.
- Completed Green School Certification. Duniway is an official Green School now!
