Welcome to the Duniway Applied Arts Program!
We are looking forward to another year of enriching and engaging fine art created by our own talented Duniway Elementary students and taught by our community of parents, volunteers, and caregivers. We especially would like to thank those who have signed-up to be classroom art coordinators, teacher liaison, assistants, and Art Committee Members. This flagship program would not be possible without all of you.
The Duniway Elementary Art Program is funded by the PTA and is entirely run by parent volunteers. In previous years, the cost was less than $10 per student for 8-10 art lessons including clay and glaze supplies for ceramics lessons. Please scroll down for a brief history of the Art Program.

Art Program History
The Duniway Volunteer Art Program has been in place for more than 20 years. The program started when due to budget cuts, funding for art programs and teachers were cut from Portland Public Schools. A group of concerned parents knew art was extremely valuable and important to children's education, so they developed a program that would be taught, funded and run by parents and the local community.
The program started small with only a few classes being taught by parents. Currently over 70 classes are being taught by more than 170 volunteers. Lessons begin with a discussion of the concept being taught and a demonstration by the parent volunteer before the children start creating. The curriculum is sequenced to give each child a foundation to build from as they progress through the primary grades. Students are exposed to many different artists that have made an impact on our world view. |
